The Meaning of Rubicon

In the first century BC, the Rubicon River formed the boundary between Italy and the Roman province of Cisalpine Gaul. In 49BC, Julius Caesar made his famous crossing of the Rubicon. "To cross the Rubicon" has come to mean the taking of an irrevocable step to which one is committed to a point of NO RETURN.
